Chicken Scotch Eggs

A Scotch egg consists of a hard - boiled egg wrapped in the meat (chicken/pork / lamb/beef  ), coated in bread crumbs and baked or deep fried. Well, the deep fried version is more popular and juicy   

The ones that I made are coated in chicken mince which makes it very light and rich in protein.
I have made this as an 'Appetizer' dish but it can even be made into a 'Main Course ' dish when served with Curry.

Prep Time: 20 Minutes
Cook Time: 25 - 30 Minutes
Total Time: 50 - 55 Minutes
Serves: 4 

  • 10 eggs
  • 1 tbsp bicarb soda
  • 500 grams - minced chicken 
  • 1  tbsp chopped green chilies
  • 1 tbsp Thyme 
  • 1 tbsp Coriander Leaves / Parsley
  • 1 tsp - Black pepper
  • 4 tbsp –Flour(Maida)
  • 1 cup - Breadcrumbs
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

Chicken Scotch Eggs
  • Bring a pan of water to the boil with one tablespoon of bicarb soda. As soon as the water boils place 8 ( Eight ) of the eggs in the water and cook for 10 – 15 minutes. 
  • In a bowl combine the minced chicken, thyme, coriander, green chilies , salt, black pepper.
  • Once the eggs are boiled or cooked well, put them in ice cold water. When cool remove the shells.
  • Dust the eggs in a little flour
  • Now cover egg completely with the chicken mixture. Keep in the fridge for 10 minutes for it to be cool and firm 
  •  Now take two small bowls. In the first bowl add the two remaining eggs and beat it well with 2 tbsp water.  In the second bowl place the breadcrumbs.
  • Roll each mince coated egg in the beaten egg and finally in the breadcrumbs.
  • Heat enough oil to cover the eggs in a saucepan. Fry two eggs at a time.
  • Remove the eggs from oil with a slotted spoon and drain excess oil by keeping them on kitchen paper or kitchen towel.
  • Cut the eggs in two equal halves and serve with a dollop of cream cheese dip. Serve hot.

Note :

For vegetarians, you follow the same recipe just replace the 500 grams minced chicken with 500 gm boiled potatoes
